Katie Schwab

4 March 2017 11:00 am - 31 December 2017 4:00 pm

Glasgow-based artist Katie Schwab works with personal and social narratives as well as histories of art and craft. Across 2017 she is consulting on our learning programme with our team and publics. She brings interesting and relevant experience from her practice as both an artist and educator to act as one of the ‘critical friends’ of the institution, offering new perspectives and ideas.

Concurrently to this, she is creating a new body of textiles in collaboration with our staff and members of our weekly Cloth Club. These works draw on various techniques and concepts found in pieces within the Middlesbrough Collection, and will be presented in our large atrium space from October 2017.

They address particular needs within this shared space, for example, one work provides woven mats to be used for our family activities, while another forms a large curtain for the shop. By exploring collective making processes and the particularities of materials, Schwab’s commission provides elements that soften the acoustics of the atrium and contribute to it as a welcoming environment.
