Jannis Kounellis

14 December 2012 - 10 March 2013

mima is proud to present a solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist Jannis Kounellis, whose influential career spans over 50 years. The exhibition features some of the artist’s most important works drawn from the nationally significant ARTIST ROOMS collection, along with a new work made for mima. Kounellis is a painter, performance artist and sculptor. Born in the Greek port city of Piraeus in 1936, he moved to Rome in 1956, and has lived and worked there ever since. He is best known as an influential figure of ‘Arte Povera’, a movement that emerged in the 1960s. His use of simple, raw materials such iron, steel and coal resonate with the steel and coal mining industries that make up the North East’s industrial heritage.
