Teesside University students who contributed to this project discuss why we looking back to the 1980s.

This introduction is given by our curatorial team and Teesside University History students who contributed research to the exhibition. In it, we rediscover Margaret Thatcher’s visit to Teesside in the 1980’s and discuss a decade that transformed the way we live. Join the tour to gain insight into the works on show and the context of the exhibition.

The exhibition looks at key episodes of Thatcher’s career and includes key moments such as the 1980 steel strike on Teesside, the first national strike in fifty years; the 1981 riots in Brixton, Handsworth, Chapeltown and Toxteth; the 1981 Irish hunger strikes; the 1981 royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana; the 1982 Falklands War, the miners’ strike and the 1988 Section 28 ruling which banned the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality as a ‘normal family relationship’.
