Barby Asante – Traces as Facts

20 April 2016 2:00 pm - 20 April 2016 5:00 pm

Barby Asante is a London-based artist that addresses the connection between representation, place and identity, focusing on the social significance of blackness in the formation of contemporary culture. She is interested in unveiling the missing chapters and unheard narratives of history, exploring what is not told or remains unseen, and thus often employs archival materials, from ethnographic photographs to popular ephemera, texts and recorded stories.

In this workshop, Asante asks whether the act of collecting, proposing or activating items for archive can generate conversations and actions that go beyond their own limits. Furthermore, she examines how can the archive make sense of contemporary conditions with regard to the visibility or invisibility in the political experience of the so called multicultural communities.
