The Smeltery Cafe

1 January 2018

The Café is an art project that serves amazing wholesome food. It was initiated by artist Luke Harding to provide a useful community café, which also explores ideas of Arte Útil (Useful Art). Luke employed community art processes; facilitated workshops and maker sessions, making use of rudimentary materials to create an exciting, tactile social space. The Smeltery operates as a real life cafe and restaurant, and is also an artistic proposition of a community cafe, which brings people into contact with Useful Art.

The Smeltery team organise an ongoing programme of maker activities, gigs and live performance events, and food projects such as The Festival of Thrift – The Town is The Menu (for 400 people) and Middlesbrough’s town meal.

The Smeltery work with us on a range of food related projects, providing creative hospitality for our art programme as well as private hire events at the gallery.

8.30am – 4.30pm Mon-Fri (and until 7pm on Thursdays).

10am-5pm on Saturdays and 12pm-4pm on Sundays (for beautiful organic Sunday lunch)
