Tees Women Poets’ Performance of Women Without Secrets in Pictures

15 October 2014

A new and immersive experience of ARTIST ROOMS Louise Bourgeois: A Woman Without Secrets was on offer in its final weekend on Saturday 11 October.

Tees Women Poets performed Women Without Secrets in response to the themes within the exhibition.

The group Tees Women Poets has been established by England’s leading performance poetry and spoken word organisation Apples and Snakes to develop the performance skills of women poets living or working in the wider Teesside area, and they have recently been mentored to create new work in response to the exhibition.

Working with local theatre company Precious Cargo, the group has devised a collaborative performance which took place in the gallery itself. It offered audiences an immersive experience, and a new way of looking at the artwork on show in the exhibition. The event also featured a headline set from North East born spoken work performer Sophia Blackwell, and a performance from award-winning local poet Sheree Mack.

Here’s what our visitors had to say about the event:

“I found the event to be very well-organised but more importantly I felt profoundly moved by the responses to the work and the courage of the performers. Their words have helped me look at the artworks in a new way.”

“Loved the local women’s poetry relevant to the exhibition, it really spoke to me. I was impressed with the calibre of poems both from the invited guest poets and the local poets; an invigorating experience, thank you.”

The event was organised by Apples and Snakes, and funded by mima Visual Arts Network. Find out more about mima Visual Arts Network here.
